Parent Help Needed: SEVERAL needs! See Sign-up Genius

Attention: U.S. Government students!  The field trip to the Utah State Capitol will be on Tuesday, February 23rd, not on Monday, February 22nd.  The permission slip had the incorrect date. Full dress is required. (Shannon, end date 2/24)

Junior ACT: March 1
On Tuesday, March 1st, all 11th-grade students in the State of Utah will be taking the ACT. This is a free opportunity for all juniors to take the ACT! Administration of this test will follow all ACT standards, so in order to create the required testing environment for our juniors, we have set aside this day for ACT testing only.
Tuesday, March 1 will be an ACT-testing-only day for our school.
There will be NO SCHOOL that day for students who are not in 11th grade.
Due to the need for an undisturbed testing environment, ACT does not allow us to have any students on campus who are not part of the ACT administration. Please make other arrangements for your students in grades 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 on March 1st as we will not have space or supervision available for them on our campus that day.
As this is an official ACT administration, we will be unable to interrupt testing to check students out.
To help students prepare for the ACT, free ACT practice materials are available (for students in all grades) at http://www.shmoop.com/utah/. Find our school from the alphabetized school picker, click “Let’s Go”, and create an account – the student Magic Word is ARCHES. (Contact your counselor for more details or if you need help creating your account.) We appreciate your help in ensuring a good testing environment for our juniors!

Ecuador Orphanage Fundraising Boutique - Upcycling Winterim
Our Upcycling Winterim created fabulous projects for sale to raise funds for orphanage needs in South America. We still have some beautiful handcrafted pallet chairs and benches, pallet art, letter blocks, handmade frames, gorgeous upcycled furniture and many other projects.  Browse our projects at http://upcyclingforecuador.blogspot.com/ and email shannon.cannon@maeserprep.org if you see something you’d like to buy.  All proceeds go to the orphanages.

Also, join us for an exciting and rewarding trip to South America to work in the orphanages and see the beautiful Amazonia in January 2017. This will be a life-changing experience you will not forget. Details to come!

China Winterim 2017 (HS, MS, Parents)
We are still inviting anyone to register to attend this winterim to Beijing and Chengdu. It will be an unforgettable, once in a lifetime trip, beyond the usual tourist sites. Mrs. Woods and Mrs. Smith, our resident Chinese and Geography teachers, and Asia-travelers are leading the trip. No prior knowledge of Chinese is needed. Please see cost, itinerary, and sign up here at http://groups.rusticpathways.com/trips/maeserchina/.

Utah Symphony-Utah Opera field trips:
Next opera, Verdi’s “Aida,” will be Thursday, March 10.
Next symphony concert, “Ballet West with the Symphony,” is Friday, February 26.
Permission forms for both events will be available in the music room.
Final performances for the year:
May 5: Opera “The Marriage of Figaro” -- BOTH the symphony and opera groups will see this.
May 20: Final symphony concert -- “Gershwin Piano Concerto”

Chamber Orchestra/Chamber Choir Retreat: March 11 & 12 -- Snow College and Arches National Park
FEE: $100. Pay in the front office by this Friday, February 26.
**If your student paid the $100 deposit for the cancelled San Francisco trip, that covers this trip.**
We will leave during school the morning of March 11 and workshop with professors at Snow College that afternoon, tour campus, and attend a concert that evening. After staying overnight in Ephraim, we will drive to Arches and hike all day, returning home late Saturday night after stopping in Moab for dinner.
Student fees will cover dinners Friday and Saturday, as well Saturday’s (hotel) breakfast. Bring a lunch for the first day, or plan to buy lunch in Ephraim -- also bring snacks for travel and (nonperishable) hiking food for Saturday. We will buy dinner in Moab Saturday evening before starting for home.

Region Solo & Ensemble Festival: March 15 after school, Providence Hall in Herriman
Orchestra and choir students who qualify (by in-class performance) will travel to Providence Hall after school (schedule TBA). We will go together on the bus, or parents/students may drive independently.

Region Large Ensemble Festival: March 22 during school, South Summit MS and HS in Kamas

The Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Choir, and Philharmonic Orchestra are preparing ambitious programs for this festival, hoping to qualify for State Choir and Orchestra festivals in May. Please remind your music student to practice every day! Choir members need to memorize their three songs, and orchestra members have very difficult music to master. Time is short, and at-home individual preparation is vital to our success.

*Identify and make a list of your strengths

*Talk to your counselor to find out about more scholarships
*Sign up with ScholarBox
*Talk to friends and relatives to see what worked well for them.
*Get organized. Keep a list of every scholarship you decide to apply for.

College Happenings
Every new ski season means the return of an old problem: trying to keep your group together while on the hill. BYU students invented a tiny Bluetooth two-way radio for extreme athletes. Wavio, as they call it, is a voice-activated, more mobile version of the classic walkie-talkie. The idea was clever enough to land BYU student Dallin Anderson and his buddies $2,000 at the recent Student Innovator of the Year Competition. BYU offers more than $200,000 in cash prizes to budding student entrepreneurs.

Campus Tours: Please consider visiting college campuses, preferably in your junior year. Students are given one excused day to visit campuses. Summer visits are typically not as helpful.
