Parent Volunteer Background Checks and Driver Forms
Will you be driving or chaperoning to get your volunteer hours? We are so fortunate to have such a generous community of parents at Maeser! Your background check and driver form is good for the whole school year. (When your insurance or driver’s license is renewed, please bring it in so we can make a copy of the new card.) The school will cover the cost of your background check, so all you need to do is complete the forms, get fingerprinted, and bring in your driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Parent-specific Messages
Enrollment Applications for New Students Open
Applications for NEW students for the 2016-17 school are now on our SchoolMint site: http://maeserprep.schoolmint.net. Applications for the 2016-17 lottery will be accepting until February 1st.
Re-Enroll Your Current Maeser Student for 2016-2017
It’s time to reserve your Maeser student’s spot for the 2016-17 school year!
Please fill out an Intent to Enroll form and return it to the front office, along with your $50 enrollment deposit, ASAP to make sure your student’s spot is reserved and not made available in the lottery. Please fill out a separate form for each student who will be returning to Maeser next year.
Questions about enrollment? Contact our Registrar, Stefanie Slade, at stefanie.slade@maeserprep.org. Questions about paying fees? Email our Business Manager, Karyl Montgomery, at karyl.montgomery@maeserprep.org.
Parent Volunteer Background Checks and Driver Forms
Will you be driving or chaperoning to get your volunteer hours? We are so fortunate to have such a generous community of parents at Maeser! We love having parents help with driving and chaperoning students on field trips and at school activities. In order to ensure that our students are safe and to meet State requirements, we ask that all parents who will be driving or interacting with students as volunteers get an annual background check and complete a parent driver form.
For more information and the forms you’ll need, please click here: Parent Background Check and Driver Application Forms.
Middle School Soccer
The middle school has a co-ed soccer team and tryouts will begin on Wednesday, March 2nd. Students who make the team will be enrolled in the 4th period MS Sports class. It is during this class that the team will hold practices. Students who plan on trying out will have the option of enrolling in the Sports Class for the 3rd term to avoid having to switch their schedules mid-term. The class will consist of fitness activities and study halls until the soccer season officially begins. Students who enroll in the class and do not make the soccer team will have the option of staying in the fitness portion of the class. Students can still tryout for the team if they do not enroll in the 3rd term Sports Class and will be switched into the class if they make the team. Please contact Mrs. Sorensen or Mrs. Anderson if you would like to enroll your child in this class.
Driver’s Education Course
A driver’s education course will be offered at Maeser Prep Academy through Wright Driving School from February 29th-March 10th. Classes will be held at the school from 3:30-5:30. The cost for the class is $230 which includes the classroom portion as well as the required drives and observations. The fee can be paid to the instructor on the first day of class. Checks can be made out to Wright Driving School. A sign-up sheet will be at the front desk. Contact Mr. Norris (jared.norris@maeserprep.org) if you have questions.
MSI Child Care for 8th Graders
To accompany our discussion of toddler and preschooler development, the 8th graders have designed an age-appropriate activity that they’d like to do with the kids on Monday 1/11 and Tuesday 1/19. If it is convenient, please consider greatly enhancing the experience for them by bringing younger siblings, nieces/nephews, cousins, neighbors, etc. to play, read, and have fun with the 8th graders on those days. Children should be brought to your student’s child care session during the following times: Group C Monday 1/11 10:15a-11:15a, Group D Monday 1/11 1:00p-2:00p, Group B Tuesday 1/19 10:15a-11:15a, Group A Tuesday 1/19 1:00p-2:00p. Contact Mrs. Benson (rachel.benson@maeserprep.org) with questions. Thanks for your support!
Volunteer Opportunities
For volunteer opportunities, check Sign Up Genius, call Heather at 801-360-6002 or email her at heatherjens@hotmail.com.
Math Tutoring Needs
The Academic Support committee is looking for parents interested in helping with math tutoring starting after Winterim ends (late January 2016). Degrees or certifications are not required. The greatest need is for 7th – 9th grade course tutoring in the after school math labs; in-class tutoring during school hours is also possible. The high school math lab hours are from 3:15-4:15 on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room 303. The middle school math lab hours are from 3:15-4:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 223.
Volunteers need to submit paperwork for a background check and commit to a regular time (at least once a month would be helpful, ie. the first Tuesday of the month). The background check details can be found here: Parent Volunteer Background Check files
Interested parents should contact Emily Cannon at emilygcannon@gmail.com indicating which course(s) they're willing to help with and general availability. Basic course descriptions are included at the end of this message.
7th Grade:
Students in 7th grade math spend a lot of time working with rational numbers and proportional reasoning. They also learn to solve basic linear equations and simplify expressions. In addition they learn how to find the surface area and volumes of 3-D figures. They study basic rules of probability. Lastly, they spend time learning basic principles of geometry using compass and protractors.
8th Grade:
Students in 8th grade math spend a significant amount of time solving linear equations and systems of equations. They work with exponents and scientific notation. They also study basic statistics (e.g. scatter plots, best-fit lines). They further their understanding of geometry by formulating conditions of congruence for triangles. They also study the mathematical properties of geometric transformations (e.g. reflections, rotations, translations, dilations).
9th Grade:
Students build on their understanding of algebra developed during the previous two courses by learning to model real-world situations with tables, graphs, and equations. In the statistics unit they learn how to measure the strength of association between two variables using regression lines, residuals, and correlation coefficients. They further their understanding of geometry by doing formal proofs.
