    Service Week 2014

December 8-12 is Service Week at Maeser! On Monday we will kick things off with our Service Assembly, Secret Service, and Service Chain. Tuesday is Janitor Appreciation Day. Wednesday is Teacher Appreciation Day. Thursday is Make a New Friend Day. On Friday we will finish the Service Chain and hold our annual Service Auction Assembly, which will raise money for the Maeser Family Fund.

    Service Opportunities

During Service Week, we have several seniors who are holding service projects as part of their Senior Capstone projects. We encourage everyone to get into the spirit of Service Week and help the needy by participating in these service opportunities!

    Teddy Bear Project
Senior Shelby Smith is collecting teddy bears for scared, injured, and upset children who are stuck in stressful situations. If you are able to help with this project, please drop off your new and gently used teddy bears, stuffed animals, or dolls at the front office. Monday, December 15th is the last day to donate bears for this project. Thank you for your generosity!

    Canned Food Drive
Tresstyn Clubb, Josh King, and Andrew Murphy have organized this year’s Canned Food Drive. Bring your canned food to the school during Service Week (December 8-12). Boxes for each grade will be assigned to classrooms (to be posted at the school on Monday) -- the class that donates the most canned food will win a pizza party!

    Shoe Drive
Travis Andersen is holding a Shoe Drive December 8-17. All sizes of shoes are needed! New and gently used shoes (no holes, please) can be dropped off at the school now through December 17th.

    Intent to Enroll for 2015-2016

    Contact: registrar@maeserprep.org

It’s that time again! All returning students and new students need to register on our website for enrollment for our 2015-16 year. It’s quick, easy, and painless! Reserve your spot now.

Make Up Your NGs in Attendance School

Monday through Thursday during lunch in room 151
    Contact: attendance@maeserprep.org
Does your student have an attendance-based NG (No Grade) in a class?
Students can make up attendance points at Attendance School Monday through Thursday during lunch. The cost for Attendance School is $2 per attendance point and each lunch session makes up one point. Each tardy is one point, tardies of more than 10 minutes are two points, and absences are three points; students accrue an NG in each class that have five or more points. **Fees for Attendance School are due at the time of checking in for Attendance School. We can no longer accept IOUs for Attendance School.**

    Attendance Reminders

    • Parents: To excuse an absence, you can send a note with your student, call the front desk during school hours, or email attendance@maeserprep.org. Absences must be excused before the end of the term when the absence occurred. Absences from Quarter 1 can no longer be excused.
    • Parents: If your student has a single-period unexcused absence in the middle of the day, it may be that s/he arrived late to class, after the teacher marked attendance, and the teacher has not had a chance to correct the attendance code. In these cases, please contact the teacher directly to ask for the change to be made. The front desk cannot excuse mid-day absences if the student was not signed out/in at the front office.
    • Students: You only have until the end of the semester (Friday, December 19) to make up your NGs. Once the semester is completed and grades are submitted, all NGs will convert to NCs (No Credit) and become permanent, and the credit must be recovered through other means (i.e, retaking the class or completing an external, online option).

Don’t know if your student has an NG? You can check your student’s most up-to-date grades and attendance in PowerSchool. If you have forgotten your PowerSchool username or password, please contact info@maeserprep.org so we can get you that information.

    Winterim Attendance

Winterim is a part of the Maeser curriculum and therefore attendance is taken and is required for credit. In order to receive credit for Winterim, which is a Maeser graduation requirement, students must participate and attend all classes during this time. Exemptions for vacations are not granted during this time due to the seat time required for credit. Please plan your vacations in accordance with our holiday break if at all possible.

    Uniform ALERT

We are seeing an increase in the following uniform infractions:

    * Unapproved jackets/hoodies (under the polo is still not appropriate)
    * Jeggings or patterned leggings
    * Jeans: even if the same uniform color, jeans are not appropriate
    * Short skirts/shorts: uniform policy states about an inch above the knee
    * Long hair/haircuts

At this time of year, we account for student growth in height and weight. If you would like to check out our uniform closet to purchase items, please contact our front office. Additionally, we are sensitive to the cold and allow opportunities for students to put their jackets/coats in their lockers without violations. If you are missing uniform items, please check our lost & found as it is gaining quite a collection of items.

    HS Winter Play: “Almost, Maine”

    December 12, 16, 17, 19
    Contact: Ms. Pedersen

Our high school drama students will be performing the winter play, Almost, Maine, on December 16, 17, 19 with a matinee on December 12 at 1:00 pm. Come see this hilarious play about Almost, Maine, a town that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States—it’s almost in Canada. And it almost doesn’t exist. Because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it’s just…Almost. One cold, clear Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. And life for the people of Almost, Maine will never be the same.

    Yearbooks

Contact: Ms. Gerber or Mr. Olsen
Early-bird pricing has now ended, but you can still buy a yearbook at the regular price! Buy your yearbook online through the end of Winterim for $55. At the start of Quarter 3 (January 26th) the price will go up to $65, so get your yearbook order in now!

    Current Volunteer Opportunities

Parents and Sewing Machines Needed for MSI
We are in need of parent volunteers and sewing machines for our 8th grade Textiles class during Middle School Intensives (MSI) in the Winterim term. This is a fun class and we appreciate your help in giving our students a sewing experience. We need about 10 machines. Please bring your machine to school BEFORE the Christmas break (December 19th). PLEASE make sure your sewing machine is clearly labeled with your name. For more information on the class schedule and volunteer needs, contact Mrs. Goodrich at marlene.goodrich@maeserprep.org.

Parent Volunteer with Accounting Experience Wanted
The Maeser finances committee is looking for a parent who is a CPA or accountant to assist for a few hours monthly with school finances. If qualified and interested, please contact Steve Whitehouse at steve.whitehouse@maeserprep.org.

    Sports Announcements

    Quidditch Team Uniforms
If you are a paying member of the Quidditch team, contact Mr. Dowdle to give him your jersey size and number. We hope to order team uniforms over the winter hiatus, but we can’t do so until everyone has given a number and paid their $40 to the front office.

    Counselors’ Corner

Counselors: Mr. Sekaquaptewa and Ms. Sorenson

SENIORS: Transcripts and Letters of Recommendation for College Applications
College application deadlines are coming up quickly! If you need a transcript or letter of recommendation for your college applications, please be sure to request those at least two weeks before the deadline. Our counselors and teachers get multiple requests each year and they need time to write you a great letter. In addition, requesting your transcript early gives you a chance to look it over and make sure everything is correct before you send it in with your application.

    Sophomore SEOPs
We will continue our annual SEOP (Student Educational Occupational Plan) meetings with our Sophomores this week. This is your chance to meet with your counselor to discuss graduation progress, make up work needed, and plans for after high school. You will also be able to make class requests for next year. We are required to meet with EVERY SOPHOMORE. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend with their student. Sign up by accessing your counselor’s appointment through the following links:
