Wednesday: Crazy Legs Day
Crazy socks and shoes.

Thursday: Obsession Day

Winterim News

Winterim Requests
The 2016 Winterim Catalog is now available on our website! Please take some time this weekend to read through the catalog and decide on your first-choice Winterim and at least one alternate choice.

Winterim course requests will open in PowerSchool at 4:00pm on Monday, September 14. Instructions on requesting classes for Winterim were included in this week’s R-News broadcast. Requests will be open in PowerSchool until 12:00pm on Friday, September 25.

STUDENTS: you will need your PowerSchool login information to request Winterim classes! If you have forgotten your PowerSchool login information, please visit the front desk before or after school or during lunch.

REMEMBER: These are course requests, not registration. It does not matter when you select your requests, as long as it’s during the open request window. Seniors will be given priority in all Winterim classes except Greece/Italy, Railroading, and Independent Study.

Independent Study Proposals
Are you planning to do an Independent Study Winterim? Start working on your proposal THIS WEEKEND and get it turned in to Mr. Simmons ASAP! We find that most proposals need revisions or additions before they are final, so please build in time to make those before the final deadline. Final, revised proposals for Independent Study Winterims are due by Monday, September 21, to give our Winterim team time to review the proposals and unlock the class in PowerSchool for students whose proposals are approved.

Middle School Intensives
All middle school students will be enrolled in Middle School Intensives during the Winterim term. During these weeks students take a break from their normal schedules and participate in specialized courses created by our middle school faculty. Students will earn grades and credits for these courses.

Important Meeting for Greece/Italy Winterim
There is an important meeting on Monday, September 14th at 5:00pm in the cafeteria for all students and parents who will be going on the Greece/Italy Winterim. We will be discussing logistics, requirements, preparation, money, and other necessary info. Please plan on being there! If you have questions, contact Mr. Simmons (dustin.simmons@maeserprep.org).

Make Up Your NGs in Attendance School

Does your student have an attendance-based NG (No Grade) in a class? Students can make up attendance points at Attendance School every Monday through Thursday during lunch in room 151. The cost for Attendance School is $2 per attendance point and each lunch session makes up one point. Each tardy is one point, tardies of more than 10 minutes are two points, and absences are three points; students accrue an NG in each class that have five or more points. **Fees for Attendance School are due at the time of checking in for Attendance School. We can no longer accept IOUs for Attendance School.**

Attendance Reminders
  • Parents: Absences must be excused before the end of the term when the absence occurred. To excuse an absence, you can send a note with your student, call the front desk during school hours, or email attendance@maeserprep.org.
  • Students: You only have until the end of the semester to make up your NGs. Once the semester is completed and grades are submitted, all NGs will convert to NCs (No Credit) and become permanent, and the credit must be recovered through other means (i.e, retaking the class or completing an external, online option).

Don’t know if your student has an NG? You can check your student’s most up-to-date grades and attendance in PowerSchool. If you have forgotten your PowerSchool username or password, please contact info@maeserprep.org so we can get you that information.

High School Math Team

The high school math team will be starting its season on Thursday, September 17th during lunch.  We will meet in Mrs. Plott’s room #302. Our first competition is in October.  We will be discussing competition dates, meeting schedules, and fees due.  We will have pizza.  This meeting is only for the high school.  Middle School Math Team will start in a few weeks.

After-School Chess Class

Maeser will be starting an after-school chess class on Wednesday, September 23rd from 3:15-4:25. Cost is $35 and there will be classes for all levels. Contact Mr. Norris (jared.norris@maeserprep.org) if you have questions. A sign-up sheet will be at the front desk.

Summer Programs for Chinese Language

Want to get out of the house next summer and study Chinese language and culture for cheap or free? Locations include Hawaii, China, BYU and more!! You don’t have to currently be taking Chinese to sign up. Please come to an information meeting about summer programs for studying Chinese, Wednesday September 30 at 6:00pm in room 205 at Maeser. Grades 9-12 are all welcome.

Music Students: Utah Symphony/Utah Opera Field Trips

Travel to Salt Lake to see professional operas and/or symphony concerts -- a fabulous opportunity to see for about $3 per performance what generally costs $60-300. The deadline to join has been extended to Monday, September 14. Students must pay by that date in the front office, and either 1) return the form to Mrs. Vincent or 2) email Mrs. Vincent at janice.vincent@maeserprep.org. Please specify which group you are joining.

Driver Education Class

There will be a driver education class starting on November 2nd after school. The cost is $230. A sign-up sheet will be at the front desk. Contact Mr. Norris (jared.norris@maeserprep.org) for questions.

PowerSchool Updates

Notification Emails
As many of you have noticed this morning, we've been working on our email server connection through PowerSchool. The good news is: it's now working! The slightly less great news: all of the emails from last few school years that were stuck in the queue got sent out to parents today. Please go ahead and delete the emails you've received for prior school years.

Here's how to set up and edit notifications through PowerSchool:

  1. Log into your PowerSchool parent account.
  2. Click "Email Notifications" in the left frame.
  3. Select the types of information you'd like to receive from PowerSchool (grades and attendance, assignment scores, etc).
  4. Choose how often you'd like to receive these emails.
  5. Check to be sure your email address is listed correctly; add any additional email addresses you'd like to have receive PowerSchool notifications.
  6. If you'd like to apply these settings to all of your students, check the box for that.
  7. Check the box if you'd like to force-send the updates now.
  8. Click Submit.

Thanks for your patience as we've worked through this issue! We're happy to be able to provide this additional level of communication for your students.
