Schoolwide Testing: Wednesday, October 19
Next Wednesday, October 19th, we will be giving the PSAT 8/9 to all students in grades 7-9, and the PSAT to all of our sophomores and juniors. This is a free opportunity for our students to practice for tests like the ACT and SAT, as well as an opportunity for our juniors to be included in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.
All tests will begin at 7:30am on Wednesday, October 19th. Please make sure that your students are on time to school and that they bring a calculator to use on the test. We encourage you to ensure that your student is at school that Wednesday to take these tests. National tests cannot be rescheduled, so if students miss the all-school testing date, they will not be able to make up the test.
We ask that you avoid scheduling appointments for your student on Wednesday, October 19th. Please be aware that we cannot interrupt the PSAT to pull students out. If your student has an unavoidable appointment scheduled on Wednesday, we ask that you keep him or her home – please email us at attendance@maeserprep.org to let us know, so we can excuse the absence in PowerSchool. We appreciate your assistance in ensuring the best possible testing environment for our students!
Testing should conclude by 11:30am and school will be dismissed at that time so students can begin their Fall Break holiday. We will still have extended-time testing in session at that point, so please make arrangements to pick them up by 11:30am.
If you do not wish your student to participate in schoolwide testing, please complete the 2016-17 Parental Exclusion form (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-hXuLKjcNtAYU9vajdrQWc1Tk0/view?usp=sharing) and return it to the office or by email at assessment@maeserprep.org at least one day prior to scheduled testing.
Thank you for your help in ensuring a successful testing day for our students!
Winter Play Auditions
Auditions for “The King and The Magician” are this Monday and Tuesday, 3:30-5, in Room 126. This is a Theatre for Young Audiences piece that will be performed for community elementary schoolers in addition to Maeser! Pick up an audition form outside 126, and bring a monologue and joke to auditions with a list of your commitments/conflicts through early December.
Driver’s Education Class
There will be a driver’s education class offered at Maeser Prep through Wright Driving School beginning on Monday, October 31st and running through Thursday, November 10th. Class times will be 3:30-5:30. Cost is $230 and includes the classroom portion, drives, and observations. Parents/students can pay the instructor on the first day of class and will not pay at the front desk. The next class will be held sometime around Feb/Mar. Contact Mr. Norris (jared.norris@maeserprep.org) if you have questions. A sign-up sheet will be at the front desk.
Parent Announcements & Volunteer Opportunities
Why Read the Classics? As a school focused on Classical Education, reading great literature is integral to what Maeser does. Read some thoughts from our Dean of Students, Mr. Simmons, about why he reads what he does. Uniform Swap Committee update:
We got your feedback and came up with the following improvements.
1. We will have 4 uniform swaps this year: Back to School night, Winterfest, New Family Orientation, and end of June.
2. We will start the uniform swap a couple of hours before back to school night begins.
3. We ask parents to USE a SAFETY PIN to attach an envelope with their name on it, to every piece of clothing that they would like money for. Not a straight pin (they fall off, or cut us, and envelopes get lost). We would also encourage parents to bring shopping bags, and plenty of small bills. And please understand that paper does tear and envelopes get lost, and we are only volunteers. We do our best to get cash back to you, but if it is not retrieved after a certain amount of time, we will consider it a donation to the school.
For this reason, we created the Karl G Maeser Student to Student Swap Group Facebook page. It is a closed group and we are working quickly to invite all families. If you don't find yourself invited in the next couple of weeks, please comment on the Official Maeser page [editor's note: and if you haven't joined that group, we encourage it]. This is a good place to sell pricier uniform items, graduation robes, sports uniforms, etc.
